SocialFolders: Sync and Backup Your Social Media Files to Your PC

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,

SocialFolders-logoSocialFolder is a new service that allows users to synchronize their files on different social media services with files on their desktop computer. Think of SocialFolders as Dropbox for your social media files. The service automatically syncs your photos, videos and files from the web with a folder on your computer that you can access offline. You can, for instance, work on your Google docs while offline. When you connect to the Internet again, the changes will automatically be made in the online versions. SocialFolder also syncs content from one service with another, allowing you to have all albums in your Flickr account automatically added to your Facebook account or Picasa account, for instance.

SocialFolders places an icon on the navigation pane in Windows explorer under the favorites section. Double-clicking the icon opens the SocialFolders folder, which contains sub-folders for each connected service. The folders are named after the online service with additional subfolders to organize the content. The program supports Facebook, Twitter, Picasa, YouTube, Google Docs, Twitter, Evernote, Instagram and several others. Right-clicking on the icon reveals options to add more connected services, refresh all services, and change your preferences such as changing your name, e-mail, or unlinking a computer from SocialFolders.

SocialFolders

The free version lets you connect up to three social media sites and transfer 2,000 files, but you can earn additional social network connection and 500 more files by inviting friends to join the service. Upgrading removes all restrictions but will cost you $1.99 per month, or $9.99 annually.

Features

Friends Sync: SocialFolders makes it easy and seamless for you to access the social content that matters to you (think of that album on your friends’ profile of your group trip to Rome) while respecting the privacy settings of your friends across all applicable social services. Friends’ content is available for Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and Instagram – without having to invite your friends to SocialFolders. This feature will be extended to other services soon.

Versioning support for Google Docs: Users can connect with Google Docs, work on documents offline, and SocialFolders will automatically sync the changes back to Google Docs in the form of new revisions in that doc.

Supported services: SocialFolders integrates with Twitter, SmugMug, Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Photobucket, Box, Google Docs, Evernote and YouTube.

Facebook Photos I’m tagged in: You can download automatically in a dedicated folder all the Facebook photos where you’re tagged.

Privacy settings: When you upload new photos or albums through SocialFolders, you can set them as private or public by default.

3 Tools to Download Pictures from Tumblr Blogs

Labels: ,

tumblrTumblr is a popular micro-blogging platform and social networking website suitable for short blog posts. Most Tumblr users use Tumblr blogs, called a "tumblelog”, to post multimedia content. Because it’s okay to post only images without any textual content on a tumblelog, this blogging platform is popular among photographers, artist, graphic designers and creators of different types of multimedia content. You can follow any Tumblr blog via RSS feeds, but if you wish to download and save images to your computer, you’ll have to use one of the following tools.

DownloadTumblr is a free, portable and open source tool that allows you to download as many images you want from Tumblr blogs. Simply enter the name of the Tumblr blog and the number of pages you want the program to parse, and then click on the “Scan for pics” button. The program will list the URL of all images found, and on your action download them to the directory of your choice. The only drawback is that you can’t preview the images before downloading.

downloadtumblr

Gettumblrpic is another free, portable and open source program that looks similar to DownloadTumblr. Gettumblrpic too lets you enter the name of the Tumblr blog and the number of pages to scan. However, instead of actually downloading the images it only returns the URL of the images found. It’s your job to download them whatever way you prefer. The links are automatically saved to a text file within the program directory.

gettumblr

tumblr-downloader is yet another free, portable and open source program for downloading images from Tumblr blogs. This program lets you specify and download images from multiple Tumblr blogs at once. Within the program directory is a text file called accounts.txt. Edit this file and enter the names of the Tumblr blogs you want to download images from. Then double click on tubmlr.jar to start downloading the images. Unliked the rest of the lot, tumblr-downloader will download images from only the first page of the Tumblr blogs.

tumblr-downloader

Keep in mind, that in all these three programs you have to enter only the name of the Tumblr blog and not the complete URL. For instance, enter chappedlipsandchiclets and not chappedlipsandchiclets.tumblr.com.

Google Introduces Account Activity

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,

Google has launched a new feature called Account Activity, that summarizes what you have been doing with Google’s various products including who you email, what devices you use and where you’ve been. Users who sign up for the service will receive monthly email reports about the Google services they use and how they use it. Users can also view these reports at any time by logging into their account and accessing their Account Activity page.

Account Activity is an alarming insight into how much information a signed-in Google user actually hands to the company. Among other things, the monthly report will detail the number of emails you've sent and received, the number and types of searches you've conducted while signed into your Google account, the places that you've signed in from and the different platforms and operating systems you've used while signed in.

accountactivity

Account activity can be actually useful in some cases, for instance, to keep track of one’s usage and catch any misuse. For example, Account Activity can help users see if anyone has been signing into their Google accounts on locations where they don't visit or from devices they don't own, and thus give them the ability to change their password to stop unauthorized use.

Account activity is an opt-in service. Since opting out doesn’t means Google will stop tracking you, it’s better to just opt-in and find out how much Google knows about you. Besides, stats about one’s activities is fun.

11 Twitterific Tools for Music Sharing

Be the first to comment!
Labels: , ,

singing-bird2Ahh, music, that essential motivator that helps us finish projects, relax or come to terms with life's ups and downs. Music has helped us connect with one another since the dawn of time , and remains one of the most talked about topics on Twitter.

Twitter is incredibly successful as a micro-blogging platform, and users are taking advantage of the vast community to share more than just tangent thoughts or blog updates. Twitter is already integrated into popular services such as Mog, Last.fm and Pandora, but a number of new tools are popping up that are tailored specifically to the Twitter experience. Thanks to creative innovations over the last couple years, there is a new wave of micro-sharing, granting a great deal of utility to favorite trends such as #nowplaying. Below are 10+ tools for sharing the music you listen to and connecting with others who share your interests.

Tunebirds

tunebirds

Tunebirds is pretty straight-forward, allowing you to search for songs or artists, then share the song through Twitter immediately or add it to your playlist. Songs you share are added to the public Tunebirds Timeline, helping music lovers connect with one another.

Crunch.fm

crunch

This simple service aims to make your tweets more musical. Like other services on this list, search for a song or artist to listen, and then share your favorite songs with your followers. The #nowplaying hashtag is automatically added.

twt.fm

twtfm

This website is a little different from the rest in that it lets you use your own MP3 link, YouTube or Soundcloud in addition to searching its music library. twt.fm will then generate a special page using your twitter design, which you can tweet to your followers.

song.ly

songly

This super-simple website lets you search for a song, and then tweet it using a pretty shortlink. It comes with browser plugins or website buttons for quick sharing, and can also be connected to apps such as Statuzer, PowerTwitter, Tweetie and Twittelator Pro.

twusic

twusic

The twusic website takes advantage of the #nowplaying hashtag to show you what friends are listening to, find new contacts and build a free streaming radio station. You can tweet directly from the app or use the hashtag from anywhere and twusic will add the songs to your "musicline." If you want to show off your playlist on your website, they have a slick widget for that, too.

TinySong

tinysong

Tinysong is a service from Grooveshark, offering a massive music catalog where you can find almost any artist or song. There's not much more to it - just search, listen and Tweet it. Tinysong also supports Facebook, Tumblr and StumbleUpon.

Full Services

Just about every major music website supports Twitter, but a few stand out for their vast catalogs or excellent functionality and ease of use.

MySpace Music

myspace

Formerly called "imeem", a social media web site for streaming, uploading and sharing music, MySpace Music has one of the largest music databases on the internet, boasting popular, indie and global artists. Many of the services on this list use this library to serve up free tracks, and despite MySpace floundering as a social community, it has grown in popularity for music sharing since acquiring imeem in 2009.

blip.fm

blip

Connect your Twitter account to blip.fm for free access to millions of songs, your own playlists and DJ station, a real-time feed of music shared by your friends across supported networks and one-click sharing.

Exfm

exfm

This beautifully designed web app offers exploration and a really nifty trending overview via a visually driven interface. Connect all of your social media accounts to quickly share or syndicate your favorites, playlists or recommendations. Portable apps are available for Chrome, Tumblr and your mobile phone, and exfm fully integrates with Bandcamp and Soundcloud, making it an excellent choice for promoters, bands and artists.

Hype Machine

hype

The Hype Machine is a music discovery and sharing website that aggregates songs and artists shared by blogs connected to the service and across Twitter. Rate, save, listen and share your favorite tracks with seamless login to Twitter, or download their mobile app for sharing on the go.

The SixtyOne

sixtyone

The SixtyOne is a completely unique experience, and while it is almost nothing like any other service on this list, it is worth a mention for the sheer joy and discovery it offers music lovers. Anyone can rate and share songs, and with a free account you can make recommendations of your own to promote your favorite artists or your own songs.

These are just a fraction of the astounding number of music sharing apps out there. Know of an impressive site for sharing music with Twitter? Let us know in the comments!

F-Droid: Android Market of Free and Open Source Apps

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,

Even though Android is a free operating system, the one that came installed on your phone is not entirely free. Many phones ship with proprietary components, drivers and add-ons that are closed source. Some phones also have a locked boot loader which prevents you from booting and installing other operating systems, or removing components from the operating system. The Google Android Market (now Google Play), which is the main source of applications for most users, consist of mostly closed source and proprietary software. It doesn't even tell you whether an app is free software or not, let alone its license. Besides that, it requires you to sign up for a Google account in order to use the app market.

F-Droid is a repository of free and open source applications for the Android platform that frees yourself of all restrictions. There is an Android client application that makes it easy to browse applications on F-Droid, install them onto your device, and keep track of updates. You can also browse the repository with a web browser, and download the applications directly from there if you can’t or don’t want to run the F-Droid client on your device. Although you can’t initiate a remote install like in Google Android Market you can at least download any .apk for transfer to your device.

fdroid2

The F-Droid repository contains details of multiple versions of each application. Multiple versions are useful, for example, for installing an older version or for installing a newer beta or nightly version. The best part is that you also have the option to download the source code and modify the apps to your liking. You can also easily create and add own repositories.

Another benefit of using F-Droid is that updates are automatic. The client can be configured to re-scan the repository at pre defined intervals to pick up updates and ensure that your version of the software is the most recent at all times. You can also receive status bar notifications when there are updates available for any of your installed applications.

The biggest benefit of using F-Droid is that it doesn’t track you, or your device or what you install. You don’t need an account to use the client, and it sends no additional identifying data when talking to their web server. In fact, F-Droid prevents you from installing applications from the repository that track you, unless you first enable ‘Tracking’ in the AntiFeatures section of preferences.

If that is not enough, applications on the repository are compiled from source, and that source code is checked for potential security or privacy issues.

fdroid

The F-Droid client is easy to use. Open the application, press the menu key, and choose update. The lists should then be populated with the FOSS apps already in the repository. Stuff you already have will be automatically detected, and put in the ‘Installed’ tab, and the rest will go in the ‘Available’ tab.

Selecting any item from the list takes you to the details of that application. From there, hitting the menu key will give you the option to install, uninstall or update. You can also view (in the browser) the application’s web site, issue tracker and source code, and you can also choose to view the application in the Android Market.

8 Cool Windows Settings Hidden Under ‘Ease of Access’ or ‘Accessibility Options’

Be the first to comment!
Labels: ,

accessibility_iconDo you recognize the icon on the left? It belongs to Windows XP’s “Accessibility options” Control Panel applet. The icon resembles a person in a wheelchair to indicate that it contains settings that makes the computer easy to use for people with physical disabilities. In Windows 7, “Accessibility options” was renamed to “Ease of Access” and the icon was also modernized. Unfortunately, because of the poor choice of icon in Windows XP, most Windows users assume that “Ease of Access” options are for handicapped people such as people with poor eyesight, poor hearing and even disabled limbs. That is not the truth. There are plenty of settings under “Ease of Access” that even able bodied persons can benefit from. Let us take a look at some of them.

ease-of-access-main

Adjust time limit of notification dialog

Windows would flash the icons in taskbar when it completes an action or is waiting for your input. For example, if you are downloading something in your browser and the download completes, the browser icon in the taskbar would flash. If you receive a new notification in your instant messaging program, the icon of the IM program would flash. Windows allows you to limit the time duration for which the icon will flash.

ease-of-access-1

This setting is found under Ease of Access. Open Ease of Access from the Control Panel and click on “Use the computer without a display”. From the window that opens choose a time limit for notification.

Adjust thickness of blinking cursor and focus rectangle

Inside text editors, browser forms and text input windows, the mouse cursor turns into a blinking vertical cursor. You can set the thickness of this cursor. You can also set the thickness of the dotted focus rectangle that appears around selectable items on an interface. Both these options are found under “Make the computer easier to see” in Ease of Access.

ease-of-access-2

In the screenshot, the rectangle around “Make the focus rectangle thicker” is the focus rectangle.

Adjust mouse pointers

You can change the color and size of the mouse pointer from the “Make the mouse easier to use” option. Aside from the usual black and white pointers you can make the pointer change color dynamically by inverting the color of the mouse with respect to the background color. This makes the mouse pointer easy to spot.

ease-of-access-3

Control mouse using the keyboard

When you turn on Mouse Keys, you can move the pointer across the screen using the Numpad arrow keys. Speed and acceleration of the pointer can be adjusted as required.

ease-of-access-4

Active window without clicking

You can activate any window by simply hovering the mouse over it and staying for a few seconds. No clicks are necessary. This setting is also found under “Make the mouse easier to use”.

ease-of-access-5

Beep when Caps Lock and Nums Lock is pressed

Isn’t it annoying when the Caps Lock gets accidently turned on while you were typing? Or the Nums Lock was off the entire time you were entering numbers? Under the “Make the keyboard easier to use” option, you can make the computer beep every time the Caps Lock and the Nums Lock keys are pressed. To make this happen, enable the Toggle key option.

ease-of-access-6

Adjust keyboard sensitivity

Click on “Make the keyboard easier to use” option and then click the link “Setup Filter Keys”. To adjust key sensitivity turn on Bounce keys. Using this setting you can tell Windows to ignore keystrokes that occur in rapid succession, or keystrokes that are held down for several seconds unintentionally.

ease-of-access-7

To avoid accidental key presses you can set a minimum time period for which the keys need to be pressed to register as a valid key press. Similarly, you can set a minimum time duration the computer will wait before accepting the next keystroke. This avoids accidental double key presses in short succession. You can also make the computer beep whenever any key is pressed, Hollywood style. (Also see Nullsoft Beep).

Disable icon flashing

Windows can replace two types of audio information with visual equivalents. You can replace system sounds with visual alerts and you can display text captions for spoken dialog in multimedia programs.

You can completely turn off flashing icons and flashing active window that Windows use a visual notification clues. This setting is under “Use text and visual alternatives for sounds”

ease-of-access-8

Have you used Ease of Access settings before?

AeroShot: Capture Window Screenshot Without Aero Transparency

It’s hard to get a clean screenshot in Windows 7, because of the transparent Aero border. You must have seen screenshots of program windows in our reviews where you can see the background behind the window. I try to clear the background of windows and objects as much as possible. Regardless, they still show up. Some take advantage of the Aero transparency to display the name of the website through the Aero border. If you prefer a clean screenshot, checkout AeroShot.

AeroShot is an open source window screenshot capturing utility that gives users the option to show an opaque background behind the window you are taking screenshot of. You can even add custom colors to the background, or show a checkerboard to indicate transparency.

AeroShot 1.3

AeroShot with background color set to white.

AeroShot 1.3 1

AeroShot with background color set to green.

AeroShot also offers a unique way to take screenshots. The application provides you with a list of running programs to choose from. You select the program you want to take screenshot of – it doesn’t matter if the program isn’t active or visible on the screen. It can even be minimized.

To take screenshots, click on the “Capture screenshot” button or use the Win+Printscreen keyboard shortcut. The screenshot can be automatically saved to your computer or copied to the clipboard to be pasted somewhere else. The “Resize Window” option allows you to resize the window before taking the screenshot. There is another option to capture the mouse pointer with the screenshot.

AeroShot is a portable application and works on Windows XP and Windows 7.

Microsoft Flight Available for Free Download

Microsoft officially released the successor of Flight Simulator X, the new flight simulation game Microsoft Flight last month. Microsoft said the realism and accuracy of the new game will appeal to flying enthusiasts while new types of gameplay will appeal to newcomers. The game is integrated with the Games for Windows Live platform, which allows players with Live accounts to join and host multiplayer sessions. The introduction of Live means that the GameSpy client will no longer be in use.

ms-flight

The game introduces a new model of downloadable content, integrated with the Games For Windows Marketplace. Unlike previous releases, Microsoft Flight was released as free-to-play game and only expansion packs are charged. The core game, which includes the Icon A5 aircraft and the Big Island of Hawaii scenery area, is free to download from the game's website. It can then be expanded with additional content including aircraft, paint schemes, and expansion packs that can be purchased and installed in-game from a central marketplace.

Microsoft Flight features new aircraft, scenery and terrain, a revamped weather engine, and new gameplay elements that users of all skill levels will enjoy. The new weather engine renders more realistic clouds and weather effects, including fog that blends well with the surrounding terrain, which Microsoft's previous flight simulator release, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, was not capable of. The most noticeable graphical improvements are the newer shader models and the use of new DirectX versions. Part of the improvement is more realistic lighting and self shadowing on aircraft, as well as the ability for terrain and scenery objects to cast shadows onto other objects and terrain. The aircraft visual models are also much improved over those of the previous flight simulator releases.

Windows_XP_FlagI know most of you have long left Windows XP, but the OS is far from dead. As of last month, Windows XP’s market share is at a healthy 30% and there are still plenty of interest around Windows XP themes. I recently paid a visit to the Windows XP section at DeviantArt, a community of designers and GUI artist where most of the themes arises from, and was pleasantly surprised to find it very active. Several decent themes have been released over the past few months. Here are 12 most attractive new themes that I could find.

Top 4 Facebook Fan Page Builders Compared

Be the first to comment!
Labels: , , , ,

thumbs-up2Apple, Microsoft, Samsung and Blizzard Entertainment are just a few popular technology brands that have enjoyed amazing success on Facebook. They use their Facebook Fan pages to announce exciting new launches, push targeted promotional campaigns and share news and content with their users. This interaction generates valuable interest and insights that can't be gained anywhere else.

For individuals and small business owners, the idea of designing and managing a Facebook Fan Page can be a bit confusing. Facebook Fan Page builders make the process less complicated, and are an excellent, low-cost option for getting your business on Facebook. The best builders offer a variety of layouts, customization options and widgets. They are always on top of design trends, so your page has the latest and greatest features. Here are some of the best Facebook Fan Page builders, chosen for their exceptional style, function and support.

ShortStack

shortstack

ShortStack is a free builder that uses a widget-driven layout, allowing you to add as many features as you wish in whatever order. Widgets include simple elements such as images, video or text all the way up to some really cool features such as Virtual Gifts, Friend Inviter and Galleries. ShortStack integrates with some popular tools too, including Foursquare, Twitter, Google Maps and MailChimp.

The Downside

ShortStack is free for smaller pages with less than 2000 likes. Once you pass that milestone, it is certainly worth celebrating, even if it means supporting a $30 subscription fee for your Fan Page service. Subscriptions offer the added benefit of removing the ShortStack logo, adding a photo upload/vote system, access to premium support and data export. By the time you have more than 2000 likes, you will want access to analytics, and unfortunately ShortStack charges $75-300 to get access to that feature. This builder does not offer a library of graphics or image, so you must come prepared with a design plan. You also don't have as much design freedom as some other builders unless you are familiar with CSS or HTML.

Why It's Really Awesome

Other than being free up to 2000 likes and packed with features, ShortStack offers a unique widget scheduling feature for creating dynamically changing pages or content to meet the needs of a marketing campaign or holiday launch. You are also given access to the page stylesheets via a CSS editor, and can easily implement your own JavaScript plugins or snippets. The interface is very easy to understand and caters to both novices and advanced users alike.

Wix Fan Page Builder

wix

Millions of people have designed a website with the Wix website builder, which is now gaining momentum with their Facebook Fan Page builder and iFrame tab app "Wix Your Page." Unlike other builders on this list, the Wix builder is a complete website creation suite for designing multi-pages in Flash or (coming in March) HTML5.

The Downside

The Facebook Fan Page builder is a bit more limited than the full page builder, but integrates an iFrame tab app for instant publishing to Facebook. The builder is currently only in Flash, which may not be best if mobile traffic is a concern, but the release of the new HTML5 builder should offset this drawback. Wix does charge a premium subscription fee if you want access to analytics and advanced features such as full eCommerce pages or reveal pages/fan gates.

Why It's So Awesome

The Wix Builder uses a drag-and-drop interface to allow novices and designers to create layouts in a completely visual way without having to edit code. Every element can be styled and customized and take advantage of the huge library of effects, animations and behaviors. Wix also offers graphics, design elements and a photo library to get you started. Their widget library includes video, galleries, slideshows, forms, shopping carts, Google maps and the ability to insert your own HTML or JavaScript if needed. It is the most flexible and feature-packed option on this list, and is also free.

Faceit Pages

faceit

Faceit Pages was developed with business users in mind, combining a selection of Facebook page templates with an easy customization system, a huge library of Facebook apps and integrated analytics.

The Downside

Faceit's Facebook Page "Do-It Yourself Designer" is the most limited of the five builders featured here, relying on pre-formatted layouts and allowing little wiggle-room for changing styles or creating completely bespoke designs without embedding an entire second webpage. Integrating Facebook apps instead of using HTML widgets puts added dependency on Faceit to keep up with Facebook's constantly changing standards and development platform, and they do not offer any eCommerce solutions.

Why It's Awesome

Like ShortStack, Faceit offers more than 20 apps you can use to build your Fan page. They offer instant publishing, fan gates, promotion and lead generation tools and beautiful reports. The premium subscriptions are very affordable in comparison to other offerings, starting at 8$. The designer itself is extremely straightforward, making this a great option for informational pages, bloggers or individuals who are completely new to Facebook Fan Pages.

PageModo

pagemodo

PageModo's Fanpage builder combines fresh templates, fonts and color palettes to help individuals and businesses create professional-looking pages quickly. As an added bonus, they offer page management and marketing tools, analytics and instant Facebook publishing without the need for additional apps or controls.

The Downside

PageModo's design options may be too limited for some, only allowing basic styling such as colors or borders, image upload and font selection. You also give up a wide selection of widgets such as those found in Wix or ShortStack in exchange for more design guidance, making this a better solution for beginners or resellers. The free option is also limited to one page and no extras, but you can preview the full suite for 30 days.

Why It's Awesome

PageModo's Pagebuilder has the lowest premium price plan at $13 for full features, and it’s intuitive interface is a breeze for adding pictures, videos, fonts, background colors and more. The templates are well-designed and keep up with today's design trends. Subscriptions even get you access to Pro Templates which include support for coupons and other eCommerce features.
