In Mobile Phone How to Detect Apps Leaking Your Data

Labels:
A service called Mobile scope acts as a watchdog, alerting users when apps copy and transmit sensitive information.

One reason that smartphones and smartphone apps are so useful is that they can integrate intimately with our personal lives. But that also puts our personal data at risk.
A new service called Mobilescope hopes to change that by letting a smartphone user examine all the data that apps transfer, and alerting him when sensitive information, such as his name or e-mail address, is transferred.
"It's a platform-agnostic interception tool that you can use on your Android, iOS, Blackberry, or Windows device," says Ashkan Soltani, an independent privacy researcher who created Mobilescope with fellow researchers David Campbell and Aldo Cortesi.

Their first proof-of-concept won a prize for the best app created during a privacy-focused programming contest, or codeathon, organized by the Wall Street Journal in April this year; the trio has now polished it enough to open a beta trial period. Access is steadily being rolled out to the "couple of thousand" people that have already signed up, says Soltani.
Once a person has signed up for the service, Mobilescope is accessed through a website, not as an app installed onto a device. A user can use the site to see logs of the data transferred by the apps on their device. They can also specify "canaries," pieces of sensitive information such as a phone number, e-mail or name that trigger an alert if they are sent out by an app.

Mobilescope can catch apps doing things such as copying a person's address book to a remote server, as Path and several other mobile apps were found to do earlier this year. Soltani says the service is intended to level the playing field between mobile apps and the people that use them by arming users with more information about what those apps do. As became clear when several popular apps were caught quietly copying contact data from users earlier this year, neither Apple's nor Google's mobile operating systems currently offer people much insight into or control of what apps are sharing

"Our focus is making really simple the process of interception," says Soltani. "If you're not an advanced user, you can still get at this data using Mobile scope."

When a person signs up for Mobilescope, a configuration file is sent to his device. Once installed, this file causes all future Internet traffic to be routed through a Mobilescope server so that it can analyze the data that comes and goes to the device and its apps. That arrangement is possible thanks to the way that smartphones are designed to be compatible with VPNs, or virtual private networks—encrypted communications that some businesses use to keep corporate data private. That design doesn't add much delay to a person's connection, says Soltani, in part because users are connected with a server as geographically close to them as possible.

Mobile scope can even examine data that is sent over the most common types of secure connection used by apps, similar to those used by banking websites, by intercepting the certificates involved. The service cannot decrypt other data, but Soltani says that few apps bother to use encryption. Data collected by Mobilescope is discarded after each session of use, and is only ever stored on a person's own device.

Soltani says he doesn't imagine Mobilescope will have the mass appeal of something like Angry Birds, but he hopes it will encourage journalists, activists, and ordinary smartphone owners to look into what apps do, and will help put more pressure on app developers to respect privacy. "Added transparency for everyone—app developers, users, regulators—will help the whole mobile ecosystem."

An earlier version of Mobilescope gave users the power to send fake data to certain apps, for example sending a spoof location. "We had to pull that out because the ecosystem is not ready for it," says Soltani, who says this broke some apps, sometimes in ways that could harm other users. A separate project does make that tactic available to Android users willing to use a modified version of their operating system

In April, Xuxian Jiang, an associate professor at North Carolina State University, published a study showing that the ad systems included in many Android apps endanger users' privacy. Around half of these systems monitor a user's GPS location, and some also collect call logs and other sensitive data

Jiang, who has uncovered other security and privacy flaws with mobile apps, said that Mobilescope will be an "interesting" new tool for keeping tabs on apps. However, he adds that it can't be guaranteed to catch everything, and says mobile privacy can only be improved with greater transparency from developers, improved privacy statements, and action from the creators of mobile operating systems. "[We] need of mechanisms for users to actually control apps' access to various personal information," he says.

Justin Brookman, who directs consumer privacy activity at the Center for Democracy and Technology, says this will require changes to the law, which currently simply encourages companies to write very broad privacy policies to avoid the penalties for writing false ones.

"Detailed disclosures are actually deterred by the law," he says. The CDT is attempting to get legislation introduced that instead requires companies to explicitly tell consumers what's happening to their data, and to provide them with more control over it.

We have good news for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 users, now you can install Android 4.0 Ice Scream Sandwich ICS OS on Galaxy Ace with the help of flashing the software. Already Samsung stated that there is no ICS update for Galaxy Ace due to low hardware specifications. So Its very excitement that Cyanogen Mod 9 will give you maximum potential that you can enjoy a lot and able to see hidden settings in your phone. You can do that all steps with given steps, its so easy. if you have any error or confuses then you comment below and we will solve your problems. Below you can see the phone status from which firmware and kernel it was running and how much ram will be going to be use in this ROM.

Its previews version have some bugs and errors so that all bugs and errors are solved in this version. (i.e Camera was not working in old ROM) and one more think is important that is this ROM can be installed only on rooted devices.

Before the Update your Device, first note that your device your device should be already rooted. then you will also need to wipe data so that your new unofficial CyanogenMod Mode 9 based ICS Beta 8 firmware install easily. Now you can upgrade your device to ICS if you need any help then just use our comments area. we will always help you.

Features of CyanogenMod 9 ROM

With this ROM you can enjoy new futures like boot, GSM (phone/messages/GPRS/EDGE/3G), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HW Acceleration (full), Sound, Headphones, GPS. All sensors like (proximity, rotation etc), Cyanogen Mod settings (not all, it’s not fully merged by CyanogenMod team, not my fault), Market (now you can download all apps available for Gio with GB), Fixed animations (now it looks so good), Facebook sync, Buttons backlight, GMail fully works, Browser fully works, ICS keyboard Games.

Update Galaxy ACE S5830 to CyanogenMod 9

Step 1. Download the zip file for the ICS CM9 from here. Click Download. The file name should be the Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-ICS-CM9-Beta-8.zip file which was 125mb file size. Click Download and save it on your PC.

Step 2. Now connect the smartphone to your computer and then move the above firmware zip on the phone’s SDcard. Now disconnect the device from the PC and then proceed and power off the phone.

Step 3 Enter into recovery mode by pressing and holding the menu center button and power button together. In case it boots into normal mode, then you should repeat the action. Remember that this should be done when the phone is OFF.

Step 4 When Clockmod Recovery shows it main screen you need to select the option that says ‘install zip from sdcard’ and then ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Select the zip file you’ve moved at step 2 and then confirm the installation of the new firmware files.

Step 5 When the update is complete you need to get back to the main recovery menu and select ‘reboot system now’. Please note that your phone will perform its first boot with the new custom ROM. Also, this might take a while before loading all the apps and the Android ICS home screen.

However, in case the first boot take too long to load it means that something went wrong and you will need to repeat all the above steps.

That’s it, you have installed CyanogenMod 9 with Android 4.0.3 ICS on your Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830. If you have any problems on this rom comment here we will find solution for your problem.

Post Updates to Google+ via SMS

mobile_phone2Google has updated the post-via-SMS feature on Google+ by extending support to 41 new countries, and by doing so took the total from just 2 to a whooping 43. The 43 countries that Google selected has very low adoption of mobile broadband that can be attributed to high cost and poor coverage. India, for example, has 900 million mobile subscribers as of March 2012, but only 10-12 million of those subscribers are on 3G services. Smartphone usage in India is quite low as well with even the most optimistic reports putting the numbers at 25 million. However, all subscribers have access to cheap SMS services.

When Google+ launched in June last year, SMS features were available only in India and the US. After the expansion, Google+ SMS is available in 41 new countries:

Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Bahrain, Benin, Cambodia, Cameroon, Congo (DRC), Cote D'Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.

The Google+ SMS feature allows users to post updates to their Google+ account and also receive notification about their Google+ activity, such as comments received, using the SMS feature on their mobile phones.

gplus-sms3

To get started, add and activate your phone number on the Google+ settings page. You can also add a PIN number for added security. While actual SMS attacks are quite rare, it is technically possible for an attacker to spoof an SMS and send updates to your Google+ account that appears as though it came from you. Once you setup a PIN, include the PIN before your SMS post and circles. For example:

"A1B2C3 Will see you at the game +soccer folks" where “A1B2C3” is your PIN number.

The list of supported carriers and the phone number where the SMS needs to be sent is available on this page, and also reproduced below:

Microsoft Office Mobile Now Available on Symbian

Labels: ,

Last year we saw the fruit of the Nokia-Microsoft partnership in the form of the beautiful Lumia Windows Phones, and it is obvious that the collaboration will bring more new Windows Phone products in the future. But Nokia hasn’t forgotten Symbian. Today the Finnish company announced the availability of a full suite of Microsoft Office apps for their Symbian line of phones.

The first batch of Office apps were released in February this year which consisted of OneNote, Lync 2010, Document Connection and PowerPoint Broadcast. The rest of the apps to join today are Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile. The update is limited to Symbian Belle devices namely, Nokia 701, Nokia 700, Nokia 603, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia Oro, or Nokia C6-01. Owners of Nokia N8, Nokia E6 or Nokia 500 will have to wait just a little longer. The Nokia 808 PureView will also come with all these apps when it begins selling.

office-mobile

Office Mobile apps gives you quick access to your documents so that you can get more done while on the go, or when you’re not using your laptop. And because these apps were created by Microsoft, the functionalities are as close as possible – if not the same – to the Microsoft Office apps on your PC.

If you’re a Word user, you’ll appreciate the fact that with Word mobile, you can save or send documents while preserving tables, SmartArt and charts, or the pinch/zoom functionality to easily view and edit documents. PowerPoint mobile will play nice to presentations without losing formatting and and with Excel mobile, you can insert formulae and view rich data and charts from anywhere.

You can get Microsoft Office Mobile using the Nokia Software Update tool on your smartphone, or connecting your phone to the Nokia Suite on your PC. Office Mobile apps will also be available from the Nokia Store in just a few weeks.
