Is your data on cloud backup services secure? None of the popularly used cloud services offer native file encryption facilities. Whatever you upload to these services can be opened and viewed by anyone. If tomorrow that cloud service gets sued for copyright infringement or whatever, they can potentially hand over your data to anyone who comes asking for it.
The recommended solution to protect yourself from such a possibility is to encrypt your data before you upload them to the cloud. For this you can use traditional file encryption programs such as TrueCrypt or even WinRAR or 7-zip. However, this adds one extra step of work. Cloudfogger is a file encryption tool that makes the task a lot easier.
Once installed Cloudfogger adds a virtual drive to the computer that acts as a secure storage for files. This virtual drive is linked to a directory on the hard drive. Anything you drop into the virtual drive gets automatically encrypted and saved to the linked directory. By linking your Dropbox or SkyDrive folder to the virtual drive, thus, you can transparently encrypt files before it gets uploaded to the cloud.
Files in the virtual drive can be accessed from any application as long as the virtual drive is unlocked. But files in the linked directory stays encrypted unless they are decrypted with the proper password. Once you lock your drive, the files become inaccessible from the virtual drive as well.
The encrypted files will appear on all other machines synchronized with the cloud account. To decrypt these files you need to install Cloudfogger on all the other machines as well. Since the Cloudfogger client program is available only on the Windows platform, it seriously hampers file accessibility from other platforms such as Android or iOS.
In addition to the virtual drive Cloudfogger lets you protect individual files and folders on any location by using the encrypt/decrypt action from Explorer context menu. For those who wish to know, Cloudfogger uses AES 256bit to encrypt the data.
